Monday, 18 February 2008 - Written by Coy [profile] Let me start off by paying tribute to a bunch of my courageous El Guapo Teammates. Yesterday was the innaugural Running of the 26.2 with Donna Deegan for Breast Cancer research Marathon in Jacksonville, FL. It turned out to be one of the most grueling run's I've ever witnessed. It started later in the day and the Sun was already up. The temps rose to the 80's and there was little to no breeze. These El Guapo Warriors not only toughed it out, but one young lady qualified for the Boston, while another shattered her P.R. by nearly 20 minutes, and another proved her metal by showing determination that was unyielding despite the fact she was physically ill she carried her head high through that finish-line. Then there were the 1/2 marathoners who not only roughed it through probably the hotter end of the course, but were so very supportive of everyone there. I credit one of these ladies with saving an elderly runners life when she found him disoriented, an obvious victim from the heat. She acted swiftly, forgetting about her run and concentrating on getting the gentleman medical attention. All of my friends represented what our club is all about and I am so proud to call these hero's my friends! |
That being said I have less than two weeks left to my marathon in Albany Ga. Now after witnessing my friends go through this pain and agony for 26.2 miles...most of it 1st hand as I paced one of them for the second half...I have to ask myself "What kind of person would want to do that to himself?"....Only a Madman, or a runner...I suspect I'm a little of both!
