Warming up really works
Wednesday, 25 August 2010 - Written by strutton1313 [profile]
Today I decided that I would do a real warm up. Usually I just stretch my calfs, jump up and down a few times and then take off. I usually think of my first mile as my warm up. However, today I ran around the block, finished with a sprint and added in a few reps of high knees and side steps. Then I stretched and took off. On the 5 miles that I PRd on the other day my first mile was a 8:37 min/mile, today I hit the first mile in 8:06 and went on to finish the 5 miles 48 seconds faster than my previous PRd 5 miler finishing with a 7:42 min/mile average. The run felt great and taught me that taking a few minutes to warm up is truely worth it.

Good to know. I usually only strech my quads before my run. Will start taking more time to do that. Thank u!

Oh yeah this makes a big difference. My first mile is always my slowest.

So what I have done a few times is just run that first .5 mile or mile "off the clock" and then start my timer and get to work. I shaved 45 seconds off my average pace that way.
