Setting my 5k PR

| Every August, we pack up the car/van and head down to the small town that my wife is from for a summer festival. Her hometown has parades, a flea market, and a 5k run/1 mile walk. We mainly go for the parade because I like the touch of small town community, but this year I thought I would try doing the run. I don't run many 5k's. Actually, I can't think of a single 5k I have ever entered. We stay at my mother-in-laws and I left early so I could register. Of course, I forgot that this isn't like trying to drive into Chicago for a big race and I was there in the empty parking lot before any race volunteers showed up. I laughed at myself for that. This wasn't a huge race, but there were a few hundred people there. I pushed myself hard and ended up posting a time of 21:50. That is a pace of 7:04. I ended up getting 2nd in my age group (the winner of the age group told me he past me right at the end too!). Anyway, I was very pleased with my time. I told my wife that the 5k was like 2 minutes of enjoyment and 20 minutes of pure pain. It hurt. I wish I could run that pace much more comfortably. I'll keep trying, but I am glad I have set a 5k time to target in the future. |
