OK, People!

My wife just asked me what kind of training watch I want for my birthday. I will be 41 on Sunday. Anyway, I told her that the one I want would probably be too expensive and that I was going to wait until next year to really spec one out (too many triathlon purchases this season). She keeps insisting so I need to do some quick research. I am looking mainly for HRM, GPS, 100+ lap counter, pace, waterproof (for swimming), maybe ability to upload, uh I dunno what else. What are people using? Any features you wish you had? Anything that you feel is overkill?

Any and all comments appreciated.

Man! I am excited at the possibility of getting a training watch!

I believe the preferred watch for tri-atheletes is the 310XT (Garmin). It's the only one that I know is waterproof (the others are water resistant). One thing to keep in mind is that the hrm and gps do NOT work while you are in the water.

You can compare Garmin products here https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142 .

I usually find that amazon.com has the cheapest prices. Even if you don't plan on buying it there it's a good place to read customer reviews concerning all the different gps watches.

I really wanted to buy that 310XT because of the vibrating alerts (my 305 just beeps) plus its ability to be submerged but the price difference between it and the 305 was too great for just those features. This may not be the case with you because you are a tri-athelete and you have a need to submerge your watch. I have read that some tri-atheletes use other watches and store them in plastic baggies during the swimming portion (something to consider).
