Pushup Jacks and HR Corelation
Wednesday, 21 July 2010 - Written by johnnyk8 [profile]
My dogs is a barkin’!!!! Yesterday I had retirement party to go to after work so I had to hang out at in the office for a few hours before heading over to the country club. What did I do while waiting?? Of course I went to the gym and did some interval on the elliptical and a few sets of pushups.

Did I say pushups? I should say pushup jacks. What are pushup jacks?

1.) Get into the pushup position

2.) Drop down (downward part of the pushup)

3.) While you are dropping down kick your legs out. Like a jumping jack.

4.) Now return back to the upright position and quickly snap your legs back together while pushing up.

5.) Repeat 10 – X times

Those are a really nice addition to any core workout. They get your heart racing, core engaged, chest and shoulders rocking. Good Stuff!

Yesterday was a tough one though. I biked in the AM (pretty nice clip in the 18 mph range for 22 miles or so) then did some ironless core and stretching at lunch. But then this routine after work before the party was where I think I pushed past the comfort zone.

Said party was very nice, good chow (very clean too, these retiring guys have to stick to Dr.s orders these days) and a lotta laughs. I got home at 9 and talked with my wife until late. Too late….

I woke up at 4:45 and set off on what was supposed to be an easy 6 miles. I started out on target. Dialed back the pace and was feelin’ good. Then I started feeling better and that stupid guy came out of me. The next thing you know I’m 6 miles into my run and 4 miles from home. No big deal, I kept it going and ended up with a run behind me. 10 miles at 7:11 pace

It was sort of an experiment. I have noticed that when I get very little sleep for what ever reason I end up with a higher HR at the end of the route. Today after my run I watched my HR. I was at 157 and on a 6:50 pace. I started walking it off and within 1 minute my rate was 105 then a minute or so later 97. Then I stretched and cooled a bit more but my HR was still at 95. Normally on a regular run my HR drops to 75 from 150 in about 3 mins.

My suspicion was confirmed and shows that higher HR is a direct result of little sleep. I knew that but now I KNOW that. I also not that I’m a knucklehead for running when tired, but whatever.

Thursday – WILL be a recovery day on the bike. A nice relaxing X distance with a reasonable HR. Bikes are great for recovery.

Now do some pushup jacks!!! If you dare!

Dude, I hate pushups. I can't imagine a pushup jack. I do pushups about once every 2 weeks and only so that my upper body doesn't waste away to nothing since I don't do much for my bod (other than swimming). I may try one or two of these. Not one or two sets. Just one or two total. :-)

I've been doing the one hundred push ups challenge hundredpushups.com/ using a tool similar to push up bars (I'm only able to do 1/4 of the amount of push ups on the push up bar as I can doing "normal" push ups).

Been trying to figure out what I was going to do after I reached that goal (100 push ups). Maybe I'll work towards doing a 100 jacked up push ups.

Hard to believe that all this stuff I was forced to do in physical ed classes while growing up I am now doing by my own will.

Diamond pushups and weighted t pushups really help mix it up too.
