| Today was the most rewarding workout of my life. Not the fastest, not the most intense just the most rewarding. It was smooth painless and very calming. It was what it why there are websites and magazines about running and fitness published.
In my previous blog (11 AM last night) I was contemplating going out for a run on my regular rest day because the weather looked great and Sunday was supposed to be crappy.
Zoom forward 6 hours to an alarm-less 5 AM awakening. I opened m eyes and peered out the window to a sunrise and a little bit of fog. At that point my mind was made up. I heading out, but I can't be too tough on myself. The prescription (other than more cowbell) was a short warm up bike ride to the Honnenegah Forest Preserve to run in the mud for 3 - 4 miles then hop back on my bike and head to my favorite turn around point and come back.
By me saying "not to tough on myself" I mean that I want to light lightly and cut down on the pace a tad bit. I do that by using my trail shoes which are very minimal and then I run on the trails in the woods. Normally if I'm on the road I will just keep increasing speed until stop. But on the trails it's slippery, twisty and there are tons of roots and holes. That forces me to really pay attention to every foot step. I love these shoes BTW - super light, super flexible and really grippy in the mud and on the hills..
After the run I hopped back on the bike and cruised. Again no frustration no mechanical issues. Nothing but sweetness. On top of that my pace was up to 18 mph for the whole 22 miles. Must have been mostly attitude driven.
I know it doesn't seem too spectacular but there was just something about, the trail, the mud, the rive, the fog,the smooth bike riding and weather that just rolled this into an excellent experience.
