Pleasing your dad
Monday, 05 April 2010 - Written by Jackmaster66 [profile]
Since I'm in my mid forties and since I only started running a few years ago, my father has never seen me run. I visited his town and took him to a local track. I ran a mile, 7:05. We walked a little. I asked him for some childhood stories in between my set of 4 1/4 mile crazy tempo runs. The man who never speaks did what he can. I dropped time in each run. He wouldn't say it, but he seemed genuinely impressed. Then I finished with one more mile. I laid out what I had and I puffed across our start/finish line. My dad didn't speak. He just walked across up to me and handed me the stopwatch, 6:56. We walked back to the car in silence.

I like your story. My dad was very involved with my athletics up until I was in Jr High. He did a lot of coaching and spent a lot of time with me. He ended up getting re-married and spent a lot of time with his new family after that, and I really haven't been able to spend much time with him the last 25 years. I'm not blaming it on him, I've had periods of time where I've been unavailable myself.

I've been trying to think of ways to spend more time with him. Maybe get him out on my pontoon, but we have a drought here and at the moment that's out of the question. Was thinking maybe I could get him to a baseball game, and I think he might like that, but he is pretty darn happy watching them on tv. Was kicking around the idea of doing yard work with him, but he would never let me help him with his, and it seems a little disingenuous to ask him to help me with mine.

However, the track idea just might be perfect. He could come out and do some walking himself, and he could man a stopwatch for me. He loves numbers and being outside. Being able to get some exercise in at the same time as me without us being separated on some trail just might be the ticket.

Thanks for the idea.
