so after a month off due to a leg injury, i am back at it. so far so good. the leg still hurts a bit, but doesn't get worse while i run on it or after. also, it seems as though the more often i run, and the faster i run, the better it feels. so, i have been running, and have been increasing my distance. usually i run home from my gym, a 3.5 mile route. friday i ran 7.5 for the first time in months. felt great! i ran 1 mile saturday, nice and easy, just to loosen up, took off sunday, then ran another 7 last night. i got a little cramping in my hamstrings, and felt a little tight on my achilies, but all in all it felt really good. and more importantly, i feel very good today. i wont run tonight, but i plan on going sometime tomorrow. maybe 5 or 6 miles. i'm excited to be back running, and am also happy to be getting in some longer runs. on a side note, does anyone live, or has anyone lived, in nyc? how is running along the east river? i was to try it, but i dont want to start a run, then...

after about 3 + weeks off, i'm back to running. I had a little leg mishap. some very painful, stabbing like sensations in my lateral leg, as well a lot of knee cracking. for a few days i couldn't walk, then it hurt to walk for a week or so. now, 3 weeks later, there is still some pain, but it doesn't seem to be getting any worse or better. so, i've decided to run on it- nothing much. im keeping a nice slow pace, and not going very far, but i'm running none the less. so far, the pain hasn't gotten any worse since i've been running. it doesnt feel so great during the run, but after, the pain stops. also, i'm not sore the next day. so i'm not too sure whats going on, or why i'm having pain. I've talked to a few of my professors (an expert in lower extremity anatomy, and another who is a DPM), and they aren't too sure whats wrong either. A friend of mine is a PT student, and yesterday i let him to an evaluation on me. He had no luck figuring out what was wrong with me either! so, as stated...

is this ITband pain?
Friday, 01 July 2011 - Written by crable [profile]
for the past week or so, i have been having some pretty severe, stabbing/shooting pain on the posterolateral side of my leg, about two inches below the head of my fibula. now, i know where the IT band attatches, and i understand that it is not where i am feeling the pain, but i'm wondering from others who have had ITB problems, if the pain i am feeling could be from the ITB. the pain is pretty constant. it actually seems to be relieved SLIGHTLY while running, but it gets worse when i stop running, and stays pretty intense for a few hours. when i sit or lay still, here really isnt any pain, however walking is hard. also, when i flex my knee fully, there is a good amount of pain, and a loud popping sound- my knees have always been a bit "cracky," but this is much louder and more frequent then your average knee crack. also, while laying down, even switching positions (lifting my leg in the air and rolling onto my side) causes a good deal of discomfort. does this sound like an ITB issue? o...

I don't think that is ITBS. My IT pain is present when running and relieved when I stop. The pain goes away when I walk. I also don't think ITBS results in knee creeking and cracking. That could be "runner's knee." My $.02.

improving overall mile time

over the summer, i think my goal is to be able to average under a 7 minute mile- that is, i want to try to reset my body into having a 7 m/m feel like my natural pace. in previous years, i seem to have averaged/run comfortably at an 8, 8:15 mm pace or so. I changed over to a forefoot strike at the end of 2010, and now seem to be running pretty comfortably at about a 7:30 mm, for however long i may be running. however, as soon as i try to push the pace, i fall apart. my breathing goes haywire, my form falls to pieces, and before i know it i'm walking. i've read a lot about increasing speed, but have yet to come to a conclusion on how to go about my training. if anyone has any suggestions, please share! as of now, i think i'm going to try to push the pace on my longer runs, and devote a day or two a week to shorter, fast paced tempo runs. hopefully this will force my body to adjust, and eventually my mind will be convinced that my natural pace should be sub-7! we'll see!!!

Altho I'm not fast usually average btwn 915-945mm. I'm comfortable where I am. However, when I first started running outside I ran with a man from my gym and he's also a running coach. I still go to him for a lot of running questions. He said people always ask him how to run faster and I say "just do it".
It was hard running with him, his pace is under 7mm. So to make it that I didn't die, and he still had a good run we did farklets. U do ur pace n then every so often u pick a spot and give it ur all. Then when u get to the spot u selected u switch back to the pace u really r.
When we got back to the gym he suggested I do those runs to increase my speed. He also said hills and tempos r good for increasing speed.
But I think u should keep ur reg pace for ur long runs. Until that pace is feeling more natural for u. The long run is for ur body to get used to running that long.
Good luck n keep us posted on ur progress.

hey, i'll be sure to update my progress. as of now i'm trying to push my tempo and not be "lazy" on my runs- i think i tend to run a little too lackadaisically, and not challenge my body, and mind. also, i'm going to dedicate one day a week to full out short tempo runs/ fartleks. we'll see how it goes

HOTTTTTT

so today, i went for a nice 3 mile run.. in 90 degree heat and about 50000% humidity. it was my first real "summer" run of the year, and after months of miserable new york weather, it was a welcome change. but also very challenging. i was immediately out of breath, and it took all i had to keep going. i averaged a 7:30m/m pace, which i'm happy about. the heat didn't seem to slow me down as much as it felt like it was. although it was tough, this hot weather is a much welcomed change to the cold, rainy, windy weather i've been running in!

trail run!
Tuesday, 24 May 2011 - Written by crable [profile]
i'm home on break from nyc for 2 weeks, and i've decided to take advantage of it by running some beautiful trails in and around webster, NY. today i hit a flat, muddy, 5 mile trail. It was my first trail run since senior year of high school, and boy, it was great!!! i ran in my vibrams- i truly think they were made for trails. running in the grass, dirt, mulch, and mud felt so great in the vibrams. it felt like i was barefoot, but i was protected from and sticks and pebbles that i ran over. my VFFs are no longer white, but it was definitely worth it! I can wait to hit some trails with hills and more scenery later this week!!! when I get back to NYC i'll have to figure something out to get in some trail running here and there. Hope everyones' week is going well!

Last months runnersworld was mostly about trail running. They listed some places in diff states that u can go to. They had someplace here in the city that mimicked trail running and they listed a place upstate. I'd tell u what they were but I rip out the pages I want and throw out the mag. Maybe u can get it from a store or newstand. I think adigeradti gets em to maybe he can help u out if u don't wanna get it. Enjoy ur time away !

thanks! i'll try to find that issue!!!

so the past few weeks, running and i haven't been getting along too well. my legs have been tired, and with school and finals, running was seeming more like a chore and less like fun. however, finals are over, i passed all my classes, and i'm officially a 2nd year med student!!!!!! woooohoooooo. with all that weight off my shoulders, my last two runs have been amazing! finally running and i are getting along. i have nice 3 week break from school before i start 2nd year- i plan on doing a ton of sleeping, lifting, and running! looks like the next 3 weeks are going to be fun!!!
