back in the states...

| Happy New Year!!
For the past 11 days I've been cross training. That is, I've been scuba diving in the Caribbean (Bonaire). 16 dives in 11 days. Did a couple of short fun runs with my Dad. At 26 I can finally run longer and faster than he can. It's about time. :) I tried to brush it off and make excuses for him when he pointed it out to me, but he told me to take the damn crown. so I will.
Anyway, back in the states means back at it. I gave myself two weeks off from running, cross training only, after my half marathon to get over these shin splints. With a few short runs in last week, it's time to ramp up (slowly) again. I'm going to focus on swimming and biking a bit for January, but I'll be maintaining some running fitness too. Then my training program for the triathlon season starts mid February!
Hope everyone has fun with their resolutions! Mine include:
-complete two olympic length triathlons this season
-qualify for the age group world championship by finishing in th...

first half marathon!
|
Tuesday, 14 December 2010 - Written by jhuxster [profile]
| Saturday was my very first half marathon! All things considered, it went pretty darn well!
I taped up my shins, which have been bugging me for a while now, and wrapped my ankle at first. After walking down to the hotel lobby for coffee, I decided against the ankle wrap. I've been wearing a brace so much, my heel/Achilles tendon has been bothering me from the pressure. I went brace-less and hoped for the best.
When we got to the race the director was asking for volunteers to sing the national anthem. If you've read my race reports before, you know I have a tendency to do that, so I volunteered. This meant I was told to stand in one place for a while as he finished up announcements, and meant that I didn't get in much of a warm up, but I did some active stretching and light jogging in place...honestly it was more to stay warm in general that to "warm-up" since it was freezing outside.
The anthem went well and I got lots of positive comments as I found my approximate pace group. I w...

| I got a quarter mile into my run today before I turned my ankle again and fell on my face in the street. I walked home, iced it, and a few hours later got on the stationary bike.
My half marathon is the 11th, a week and a few days away. Between the shins and the ankle, I just hope to make it to the starting line at this point. I think my plan is to bike again tomorrow, maybe jog a bit Saturday and see how I feel. If I can, I would really like to get my last long run in on Sunday before I taper for the week before the race.
So far I had only gotten up to 9 miles and Sunday I was supposed to do 10. I do think I can finish, but I am worried about all the injuries. And i would really like to make a good time...
This has been ridiculous. After my half I am sticking to yoga, biking and swimming for a month or so to see if my legs can figure their stuff out... |
