10 year olds 1st run
Wednesday, 06 July 2011 - Written by tammy23 [profile]
My 10 year old is an athlete, so I naturally figured he'd be good at all kind of sports. Lets saying running more than 90 feet at a time(as in baseball) is not his forte...however, he ran 1.82 miles, stopped only 3 times...and he really pushed it at the end...

I gave him a lot of credit...but I give him 3 or 4 more runs and he will be able to run the entire course without stopping...to much credit?

He is funny as well, on our run..he turns to me and says, "Do you ever stop to rest mom? " Inside my own head I was laughing, but for his sake I had to be serious or he would think running is just a joke and a waste of time...Of course my answer was, "No."

His immediate response was, "Well I guess Im out of shape then and you're not" WOW!..someone actually admitting he/she is out of shape...none-the-less-a10 year old....

We will keep doing the run/course and hopefully he learns to enjoy running..if nothing else, maybe he will just enjoy the mom-son time..

Happy Trails!

a 10 year old runner
Tuesday, 14 June 2011 - Written by tammy23 [profile]
Starting this week, will be working with my 10 year boy, a baseball and hockey player, to run some shorter runs with me (1-2 miles).. Working on developing his cemented, lead bearing 8.5 size feet into faster, quicker, less cemented and lead bearing 8 1/2 size feet!!! Should be a great mother and son quality time...My bet, he'll go 1/2 mile and want to walk.....any takers for 1/4 of a mile?

I'll start him out running a slow 1 mile..maybe 10 min mile..then some 4 x 100 sprints...that should be a good days workout for him...and the sprints will be a workout for me..Sooooo, not a sprinter!!

I say Good Luck...to us both : )

I run with my son, we started when he was 10. Believe it or not, our first time out, he ran circles around me....I couldn't keep up with HIM! He doesn't necessarily like running though, so he goes fast to try to get it over with sooner. We run one mile 3 or 4 times per week. And it is really good for that mother/son relationship.

/I'm a casual runner about 12 miles per week total.

Running routes

Thanks to all those who commented on Stuck in the drab weather...you guys really helped with your comments. I stayed with treadmill running and used it for speed and some incline work...

Did I tell you, I LOVE my new running routes?!!! A few of them are a challenge, some gradual, long hills and then some flat areas..great workout!! Plus, theres many other people out running, walking or biking so its nice to run into others...figuratively speaking!

IF you are finding it hard to get motivated to run, may a I suggest..go look for new running routes. It really helps to get excited to go out for a run, especially if you know you have a longer run day coming up...

Ran Monday june 13th, felt really good, seemed slow as I ran with my husband and he has a slower pace than I do..It was a high to run and be under 9 minutes and knew had I been by myself, I would have ran more like 8 1/2 minute miles...thats almost 45 seconds off my starting time this spring...FEELS GREAT!

Hope ever...

Renewed energy

Its been a hectic few months and now I have a new motivation to run...NEW RUNNING ROUTES! I dont like to drive to a place and run..for me, running to somewhere always means I HAVE to run back to the starting point and then I know Im done.

Im starting up slowly..3-3.5 mile runs, at about 9 minute miles. Seems slow as a year ago I was at 7:58 mpm...Ahhhh, but I will get there again!! and a half marathon in sept or oct is my goal and the time I'd like to have is 1:42...thats 10 mins off my PR..I hope I can do it!

winter blues
Wednesday, 19 January 2011 - Written by tammy23 [profile]
Stuck, in this drab, bitter cold, snowy winter season. Been treadmill running for..way to long. Want it to warm up..want to be outside to run. Then maybe I can run more than 3.5 miles at a time..just to boring on the treadmill for me.

The new years resolution, well, it didnt work. Fell off running last week..had a cold and didnt want to push it, afraid I'd end up with bronchitis again..so took the week off, but started up this week and have been doing pretty well.

New goal; make no more new years resolutions! : )

cheer others on and start pushing my running more..quit being so lazy!

So funny! Its somewhat warm here in South MS and I'm milling it anyway. I'm with Chrissy on the fact that it can be used as a speed tool; broke a PR on the 5k that I set last year and I think its why I was able to hit the long run last week (outside this time) at the pace I did. The things have their pros and cons!

Tammy, right there with you. Hang in there. This site is very supportive and you're certainly not alone. I have stayed inside running since the Turkey Trot in Detroit. It's been a long month and half. On the rare occasion the sun does shine, it's either too cold, icy or I just can't fit in the day.

I've been sticking to a 30 minute work-out on the mill. It pushes me as I keep it on a 4.0 incline and progress faster and faster until exhaustion. My hope is that all this mill work and pent-up frustration pays off with improved running this spring.

Here's to all my fellow 'millers staying out of the cold. This too shall pass!

Tammy---i have also turned to the treadmill cuz of this horrible winter cold. I hate the cold, even walkin in it. I told myself I'd run in it cuz I won't know if I like it till I try it, but i can't bring myself to torture myself like that. Good thing is i go faster on the treadmill. So I look at it like its a helpful tool that will increase my speed when I do hit the road. Funny thing is I have a cruise coming up in feb and I'm super excited that I can run outside (even though its in circles on the top deck).

3 more days
Wednesday, 29 December 2010 - Written by tammy23 [profile]
Only 3 more days until that New Years Resolution I said I was going to make....and keep. Need to start looking for a 10k in march or april and then a half in june and a marathon in september...I'll run a few smaller races maybe throughout the year...Crazy Legs In Madison Wi is always fun and the Syttendmai in stoughton wi as well, not sure if I will do the 10 or the 20 miler. I did the 10 last year..with chronic bronchitis..in 1:30 mins..Maybe the 20 this year?

Anyone else make a New New Years Resolution? Doesnt have to be about running!

Keep running and dont forget to replace your shoes!

Hey Tammy where do you live? Sounds like I live about 50 miles from you based on the races you are mentioning.

New Years Resolution
Wednesday, 15 December 2010 - Written by tammy23 [profile]
How many of you do a New Years Resolution?

Well, I never have. But this is year, I am.

Looking back through my running logs for the last 2-3 years, I noticed that my running really has decreased from 700-800 miles a year (4-5x week) to about 500 miles a year...WHY? Good question...Not sure. I had an infant, an 8 year old, husband, full time job, commitments, just like everyone else, and yet my running really took a plunge and a back seat. I still have all those, except they are now a 3 year old and a 10 year old.

I would start out in the beginning strong, consistent, a regular running schedule...for 3 months, then taper off and then strong again..july seemed the month I would put in the most miles...and taper off again in november. So now, my GOAL is to run every other day, even if its only 2 miles, dont over run..as not to 'Burn Out". Maybe then I will see that every month is consistent...not so sporadic.

Then my next goal is to start running some more races..I only ...
