Gonna Try an Afternoon Run
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 - Written by johnnyk8 [profile]
Normally I get up and run early but today it was pouring pitch folks and hammer handles (similar to cats and dogs) and I don't like to get my iPod wet so I stayed in.

At work we have a very nice running path and walking path. My company is very involved in the health and wellness of its employees which is quite cool. We have a gym too.

Anyway - today I'm gonna run a few laps on the path (about 3 miles) and then hit the gym after work since I normally lift at lunch.

Good News though Rain = Spring is close!

Oh, I love running in the rain. It took about 3 or 4 times before I figured out the right way to dress for it, depending on the temperature - and it cost me a pretty penny to get the right clothes - but it was worth it. Not only is it all pretty and hazy outside, there's something about the the white noise that's soothing. And, as I've read on here somewhere before, you always feel twice as accomplished after a run in the rain, compared to doing the same run on a nice day...

What do you like to wear? Most waterproof raingear is too heavy and doesn't breathe. I'd like suggestions for something light (our rains are usually in the high 50s/low 60s in temp) but that didn't leave me waterlogged at the end of the run.

I like running in the rain but it was only about 35 degrees this morning so it would have been pretty rough. None the less I wish I went out. As usual when I try to rearrange my schedule something gets screwed up. I got hosed out of my run today and all my other workout plans too. I work for a food company and we are having to deal with recalls you probably heard about it on TV. Therefore I had to skip lunch today so no workout for lunch. Then due to the lack of food (norm intake is 3200 - 3800 per day) I was so tired I couldn't really do much in the gym after work. I got on the mill and started with the cold sweats and then my knee started shaking. That means STOP NUMBNUTS YOUR BLOOD SUGAR IS TOO LOW!!!

But hey a run 45 miles a week with no training to really stick to I can take a day off. Well I guess I did do 2 miles on the mill.

Maybe I'll do a nice core routine after I eat some darn food.

Usually I pack a clif bar and a bunch of fruit so this doesn't happen. I better bring those thing on Thursday. My wife calls those the "extinguishers" because I turn into one grouchy SOB wihout my emergency snacks.

I don't wear anything too special in the rain. I live in the Pacific northwest, so it isn't too cold. I get the moisture wicking shirts and pants. They are soaked by the end of the run, but for me they seem to keep the moisture in the shirt rather than on me (my undergarments are normally not wet, unless it is raining hard). I have found that any raingear is just to hot. I also remember to keep my shoes siliconed, I hate wet feet.
