the fifth week

Today concludes the fifth week of our training program.

We took a week off between 4 and 5 because I was out of the country and Beth was sick as all hell, but we're back on.

This week was a little odd. We decided to ramp up our training a bit so that our short runs on Tuesdays and Thursday increased from 30 minutes to about 45 minutes (the training program that we're on recommends 30-45 minutes).

So Tuesday we decided to run as far as we could in 45 minutes... Somehow we ran quite far out of the way, and since we were doing so well we just kept running. In 41 minutes, we only took one break. We were a bit disappointed to realise that our 41 minutes only took us 3.6 miles (we ran further than that in total since we were still quite far away from harvard at that point, but we stopped timing).

Unfortunately during this run I sustained my first athletic injury - I strained a hip flexor muscle in my right leg. It was bothering me a bit while we were running, but I didn't think much of it at the time since it seemed like a small cramp...later that day and the next day I was paying for it big time. It hurt so badly on Wednesday that I was limping! Luckily it healed quickly, but we did forego training on Thursday in caution not to aggravate it.

We did our long run on Saturday so as not to interfere with kickball. It was 7 miles, and it was a doozy. I felt so frustrated at the end that I just couldn't keep up with Beth. I hate being the one who slows us down. We ran it with a time somewhere between 80-90 minutes; that's like 12 minute miles. We really need to work on our pace, and I have to start cross training in our days off.

In the end, I'm just happy that we're running.
