Never thought I could...
Wednesday, 18 November 2009 - Written by Lib [profile]
I never thought I would be a runner. I always admired people who ran... they're so strong, and thin, and always look so determined... and there was I: past forty, four kids, one leg longer than the other, no WAY could I be a runner. Then I got divorced (can you hear the Hallelujah chorus?) and bought a decent pair of shoes, and some very nice lycra stretch pants, and very slowly I started running. Run, walk, gasp, walk, run... and that was over a year ago, I run an average of four times a week, 8km or more, plus biking and weight training, and I LOVE IT! I try to arrange my day (did I mention the four kids?) around my run schedule to make sure I can fit it in. I've had a few minor injuries (did I mention the past forty bit?) but I back off and go easy and they get better. I think thats the most amazing thing for me... before I started running, I saw a chiropractor regularly, had a bad sciatica, sore knees, my hips ached... and now all of that has gone away. And when I strain my calf muscle, or get shin splints... they heal! Running has rejuvenated me from being a middle aged lump of complaints to a happy, active person with goals. I like reading about the marathons people are training for... my running is very much an individual thing, I dont think I would like to run with others. It's a total stress reliever, just me and my music, but I might get to the point of wanting to challenge myself to a race. I think I'm still afraid of gasping too loudly, and dragging my ass over the finish line last! Running is dancing, and I love it!
