Beating the Heat
Saturday, 29 August 2009 - Written by jmccaman [profile]
I'm training for my second half marathon (with my sister), but this time in hotter weather. It's going really well and we have 5 weeks left. We completed an 8 mile run this morning at exactly a 12 minute pace. It's strange how the hot weather slows you down. I averaged about 11 min miles last winter. I will not shoot to break my PR this time, and I know that's okay. I'll wait and do that next spring when the weather is cooler. Running is a great sport! I'm addicted.

The only way I know is to get up before the sun. Although I went out for my Saturday run starting at 5:30 AM and noticed the sky was already turning colors. I also setup routes that allow me to drop off frozen water or gatoraide bottles. That way you can pick them up at mile 5 or so and they are thawed, but still cold. A few short runs in the heat of the day will cause your body to increase blood volume/plasma to help with cooling, but I generally stay out of the sun during summer runs. Finally, I try and use my heart rate monitor. You will notice that pace drops significantly in the heat when you run at the same effort. So my 80% heart rate pace goes from 7:30 m/m in cool weather all the way up to 8:30 minute miles in warmer temps. I think you get a good workout either way.

Not funny, Adi!

For living in Dallas, it is bad that I did not really catch what you were saying. Too clever for me. That said, I am not much of a basketball fan either. Even if we are world champs. The Hockey playoffs usually win over the NBA in my book.
