Derby Marathon Week 14: Hardwork
Saturday, 07 April 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
Week 14 or 3 weeks before the race. I'm starting to get excited and since my training has been going very well for two weeks now, my confidence level and enthusiasm have been rising.

This week was a hard one both personally and training wise. Running was a welcome distraction and kept me sane.

This was also my biggest mileage week since the beginning of January. I made sure to ride enough to avoid injuries.

I should start tapering now but I'm thinking about another 20 miler next Saturday and taper for only 14 days. That will be 3 20+ miler in 3 weekends in a row. I will be running the Flying Pig marathon 8 days after the Derby marathon so I think this might be my best option to be ready and in great shape for both marathons.

Week 14 totals: Ran 44 miles && Biked 41 miles

MidwesternWoman says:

You are awesome. Glad your training is going so well.

KathyStenson says:

Take good care, listen to your body and if that extra 20 miler feels right, go for it. But if it doesn't....I know you'll back off a little. You've worked so hard and overcome so much you'll do the right thing here too.

Glad you made it through a tough week, you've got some exciting weeks ahead of you, enjoy every moment!!

rcblu2 says:

That is awesome. I wish my body could tolerate 20 milers better. I would be too beat up for the first marathon if I attempted three 20 milers. Stay healthy. You are going to rock these marathons.

JDMiller316 says:

Good luck Lazy.

I'll be out there with you at the start and well behind you I'm sure when I turn back towards the finish of the Derby Half Marathon while you continue on towards Iroquis park.

This will be my first half marathon. I'm looking to get 12 miles in this weekend for my final long run before the race.

Derby Marathon Week 13: Lucky Number 13
Saturday, 31 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
I feel like this has been my best week in a loooooong time. My allergies are still bothering me but I feel much better and I'm not laying down all day.

I was finally able to do a 20 miler which I should have done few weeks ago. If I'm still healthy, I'd like to run another 20miler next weekend and another one after that. That way, I'll start tapering on April 15th for my back to back marathons.

The first 15 miles were very hilly and a struggle but by some miracle I felt great and was able to pick up the pace in the last 5 and finish strong. Great boost for my confidence!

Week 13 totals: Ran 32 miles && Biked 28 miles

KathyStenson says:

Glad to hear you're feeling better, sounds like a solid plan!!

March (Lazyking)
Saturday, 31 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
Ran 137 miles

Biked 66 miles

Highlights of the month: Taking few days off (even missed a 20 miles long run) thanks to very bad allergies and a half marathon race.

I need April to go smoothly so I can run a decent marathon on April 28th and another one on May 6th.

keyronn says:

Great job this month. Good luck in the Marathon!

splitt52 says:

Great Job! Hopefully I can start incorporating biking in the next month or two!

rcblu2 says:

Great month. Back-to-back marathons? I gotta try that some day. Can't wait to hear about it.

Derby Marathon Week 12: Allergies
Sunday, 25 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
Just when I thought that my training was finally going the way it should be, I once again get sidelined. This time it was my allergies which are 6 weeks early.

However this week started great with a very fun and worry free half marathon race for the American Heart Association.

When I went to buy some ClaritinD, the pharmacist said "you wouldn't believe how many of these I sold today" Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for me and I didn't leave my bed since Wednesday night. Now I'm taking a syrup that has codeine to help with the cough and sleep. Even with the codeine, I still have all the symptoms and I have the feeling that I'm going to need some antibiotics this week.

I missed my long run this weekend :( but it's all good :) I'll resume my training this week and I still think that I'll have a fun marathon.

Week 12 totals: Ran 26 miles && Biked 12 miles

KathyStenson says:

Sorry you got sidelined, your allergies must be super bad. Hope the medication kicks in soon.

I'm even suffering a little with post nasal drip due to allergies, and I normally don't really get them, so the mild winter must have everything blooming twice as much as usual.

Glad you're rolling with the punches (or maybe that codeine makes you just not care!!), and I know you'll be back on track soon!!

Lazy Half Report: Accidental PR
Sunday, 18 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
I know that sounds arrogant but I really had an accidental PR. As you know, I'm working on getting my right knee to top shape. And the goal for this half marathon was to have a great workout and fun. Mission accomplished. I spent pretty much the whole race talking to people, waving and high fiving!

This cause is close to my heart so I really wanted to participate even though I didn't want to compete and give my best.

I went out with the 8min/mile pace group but felt very good after 3 miles so I decided to run on my own. It was hilly, hot and humid (the 3 H) but there were many water stops to keep us hydrated and cool. We were expecting some rain but we didn't get a single drop so that was another positive thing.

During the race I kept picking up the pace mile after mile and I ended up running the last one at 6:40 min/mile. My knee did bother me few times but nothing to stop me (however, I walked during the water stops (I pretty much always do that)).

My previous half marathon was...

KathyStenson says:

Fantastic!!! Sounds like the perfect race...fun, relaxed, and a PR!!!

Your diligence in taking care of your knee really paid off, how exciting!!!

johnnyk8 says:

Mega! You're doing wise things and are setting the table to crush that goal!

lazyking says:

Thank you :) Im very happy about this race. I didnt realize the PR until the race was over and this shows me that my recovery is going great.

NeedhamPaul says:

That's tremendous progress. I can't imagine sub-7 min/mile without thinking about it. Watch that knee carefully, though. You might not realize how much stress you're putting on it 'til the next day. How does it feel now?

jeep_dog says:

Wow, congrats! Superbly done, friend. Man, what I wouldn't do for an "accidental" PR in the next 30 days - would do my spirit well. Seems like this one will help keep your spirit up through the next round of training.

rcblu2 says:

That's a hella time! Very nice. Watch that knee tho.

lazyking says:

thanks guys! Im just sore today but mostly my upper body and so far no knee pain. Im taking 2 days off running for recovery even though I feel fine.

Derby Marathon Week 11: Summer in March
Saturday, 17 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
The big story this week was the heat. It went up to 91 degrees on Wednesday. I can't believe winter is still not officially over yet!

I managed to run my first sub 8min/mile since my knee injury so I'm very happy about that (8 miles at 7:40 pace in 85 degrees) That run is giving me the confidence to run the HeartMini half marathon tomorrow at 7:40 or 8min/mile (in case of rain). My knee is almost 100% back (I'd say 95%) but that still won't change my goal of taking it easy during my upcoming marathons. My goal for this race before the injury was to run it at 7min/mile :( Another time! Few weeks ago, I didn't think I'd be able to run in the Heart Mini events so I'm grateful to run it. My main goal is to have fun and a good run. I think I'm prepared for the best and the worst. I'll post a race report tomorrow.

Week 11: Ran 25 miles && Biked 14 miles (Yes, rcblu2. I'm a programmer)

KathyStenson says:

Wow, it rained in NorCal all week, snowed 6 feet in the Sierras, so we finally got a winter!!

Best of luck, take it easy, stay injury free, and let us know how it goes.

rcblu2 says:

I love the "take it slow" strategy. No worries on the 14 miles biking. It's a start. ;-) It also is more cross trainer than I did for years. Not to mention that 25 miles is a big running week. Solid week.

MidwesternWoman says:

You are coming back strong!

johnnyk8 says:

Strong performance. Strong!

This recovery is really looking great. Destroy Rebuild Improve!

2 marathons in 8 days
Wednesday, 14 March 2012 - Written by lazyking [profile]
Yep! I just signed up for the Flying Pig Marathon. As you all know, I'm currently training for the Kentucky Derby Marathon. I'll be running the Derby Marathon in Louisville on April 28th at a moderate/easy pace and the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on May 6th at an easy pace. I'll be running with friends who are slower than me so that will keep me from running too fast.

Also, my Flying Pig bib will be personalized with RIP MOMMY.

I'm actually very excited about these 2 races and I hope to stay injury free for the rest of the year so I can run a fast marathon in October (Chicago Marathon)

I know few people who have done this before and they say that I can do it and to wisely pace myself. I've talked to people who have run 2 marathons in 2 days and it didn't kill them LOL.

PS: thank you for the birthday wishes and if you have any advices about this crazy thing I'm about to do, please share them.

MidwesternWoman says:

Happy late birthday!!!!

Good luck with your back-to-backs. Here I was feeling unmotivated and sluggish, and you have inspired me to do better!

rcblu2 says:

Crazy. Can't imagine doing 2 marathons in a little over a week. Good luck.

Donshields says:

That is impressive. Great work ethic to accomplish such a feat.

jeep_dog says:

No advice, brother. Not so crazy. I plan on doing something like that in fall, but in one day. No, wait, I guess that plan is technically considered a 100K ultra.... :)

Happy belated birthday, old man. ;)
