Why?

2 weeks into my learning to run program and I can barely run now. My knees feel like they have locked up and I cannot propel my legs into motion. No feat walking, but running? Ha. Fugghedaboutit.

I am very pissed off with my body tonight. I thoroughly enjoy my running time. I guess I will need to make a sacrifice. Instead of running every other day I will do M, W and F's from now on until I am feeling better and this w/e I will only walk. Perhaps I get some pool running in since I will be away and near the water. Or would that be a mistake?

Gah. Someone tell me this kind of thing happens and that it will go away.

/end of rant.

It happens and it goes away. Keep it casual. Walk as much as you have to. As much as you can, keep your frequency up and the intensity low. Of course when you need days off, take them. We all struggle when starting out.

Thanks Mury. :)

Yeah, I'm going to walk as often as I can this w/e and see how it goes by Monday. It is what it is. Ha.

Run #3!
Monday, 19 July 2010 - Written by dayglohalo [profile]
Hot out today but I ran this afternoon. God that felt good. Stretched for 5 minutes before I ran and for a few minutes after the run. Accomplished an extra minute today of running time. Yay, go me. So, I'm up to 5 minutes worth of jogging per run but I had to start somewhere. However, I have found conflicting information on walk/run segments. Right now I am on Week 1 and this is my schedule:

Walk 5

Run 1

Walk 4

Run 1

Walk 4

Run 1

Walk 4

Run 1

Walk 5

I have seen many other schedules that say walk 4, run 1, walk 3 run 1......etc, etc. I'm confused. I feel like I could push harder but I don't want to kid myself either. I'm also clueless as to measuring my walks/runs here @ LYR. I have no idea what my pace is and how far I travelled.

On a different note......I have to say that I was SUPER starved when I got home. So, I downed a big ass bowl of salad. It's only 4:26 PM and I am still famished. I take it that eating habits begin to change when learning to run?

I have cho...

Yep eating will increase with miles. A good rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile of running. I count them as apples. 1 mile = an apple orange or banana. Bananas cost a little more than a mile actually

When I first started running I would crave ice cream after about 20 minutes of running. It took a few weeks for those cravings to stop and prevented me from losing any weight during those weeks.

Feel the burn.

Thanks to those who left a comment on my very first blog post. Your words are encouraging!

I can't deny it. I'm hooked and I have only done 2 runs thus far. Took yesterday off b/c my thighs were tight and I needed a re-coop day. I'm amazed at the fact that my thighs feel fine already. Looking forward to seeing how far I can make it tonight.

Bought myself a tee that says: "I AM MY OWN ROLE MODEL"

You know it. Doing this for me and no one else.

Why didn't I start this years ago?! Ha.

johnnyk8 says:

Good stuff - make sure you stretch out for 5 minutes or so after your run. It will help a great deal with tightness.

rcblu2 says:

Awesome! Rest days are important and should be a part of the plan. Running is tough on muscles and bones especially if they are not used to it. So give yourself that time to heal. Sometime those rest days can make you hunger more for getting out there and run again. Patience. It will come. Glad to hear you are moving!

Day one. Started a learn to run program. Made it through the first attempt. We shall see what becomes of this craziness.
johnnyk8 says:

We all of have had a 1st run. Get into a rhythm and make it a habit.

Questions??? Make sure you ask, there's a lot of experience on these boards.

Welcome to LYR!

rcblu2 says:

Welcome to LYR. Congrats on starting the program. Be patient with yourself. If you can maintain some level of consistency things get much easier over time. Eventually you find yourself enjoying running. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
