Started running last year and logged in 207 miles for the year. It's not much, but it is for me! Goal for this year is to increase that by at least 5%. Here goes for 2011!
Has anybody had experience with this muscle behind the knee. I hopped on the treadmill today and not more that a 2 minute jog the muscle behind my right knee started to twinge. It felt like a cramp or a muscle pull but never actually locked. I stopped, stretched some more, and jogged walked for about 20 minutes. I felt a little twinge whenever I jogged, so I'd walk. This has happened once before about a couple of months ago, but I thought I was just cramping.
I looked up this part of my knee in the internet and that's how I ended up knowing about the Popliteus muscle. I just want to know if anyone has come across this problem.

My mother-in law (who walks, not runs) had this happen last year. She went to a physical therapist who gave her exercises to do, and now it is better.
Ran a 5k around my hood and I really struggled today. I've been running 3x a week since the beginning of the year and this morning I felt like I've never run before. I timed in @ 32m 49sec, about 6 min below my pr.
Maybe it's because I haven't been sleeping as well as I should 'cuz my energy is way down. I've also eaten too much junk lately. My recent back pain doesn't help either.
Whatever the reason I must figure it out and fix it!
For some reason, my lower back started to hurt again. Felt it Tuesday morning, and thought I just selpt funny and would be gone by today but nope. Couldn't do a run, so I decided to walk with one of the programs on my treadmill with hills. I hardly do any hills so I was quite surprised how good of a workout it was. It was a good change of pace considering I couldn't run, but I might actually use it in the future as a good change of pace.
As for the back, there is still pain, so I hope it'll be gone by the time I do my long run on Saturday.
How sick would you have to be to not run? I've hit a good groove with my running routine that I don't want to break that up. I've got a sore throat, cough, and the sniffles, but no fever or overly congested. I'll give it a go since I feel like I can handle it, just curious too see at what point would some of you keep running.

I rarely take time off. The only exception in the last two years was just recently when I had a severe concussion. That put me off for 7 days. So take this with a grain of salt as I am a knucklehead.
The rule of thumb is if the tightness migrates to your chest you should NOT run. It's up to you to make the call but it would suck to push yourself a tad bit too far and end up derailing your groove even more than you would have if you just waited for it to pass.
Sleep is key. It heals your legs and it helps you fight off the virus too.

Exercise boosts your immunity. I agree, just add A LOT more sleep and water and don't add 2 miles to your current max or cut 10 seconds off your mile time and you will actually be helping your body.

Do you like to run with your iPod? A lot of runners don't like to, prefering to enjoy the scenery instead, as well as a safety issue. I've also read that a lot of races won't let you use iPods. Has anyoe ad an experience where they were not allowed to have music on a race?
I can't seem to run without it. Especially on long runs. Well, at this point, unless it is a sprint, everything is a long run! I just want to train with music and I fear that I won't be allowed to do so during races.
BTW, anyone here have advice as far as the best headphones to use. My iPod earbuds keep falling out and is starting to get annoying. I bought a couple of over the ear ones but they keep slipping off, guess they are not really one size fits all.

Hey Ro Runner!
I'm like you...I need my iPod!
Anywho, nike makes a great athletic headset. they are like earbuds but they have these things that sorta clip onto the ear. I had to buy them too because the others kept falling out of my ear. They make them in black & white & they sell them almost anywhere. I got mine at Target. :)

I used blue tool insignia headset.

Most of the races say they don't allow them, but they don't seem to ever stop anyone from using them, so it doesn't seem to be strictly enforced.
I also used to be scared to leave the house without my ipod, but I think running my long runs with a partner got me out of that habit and gradually I have gotten to the point where I feel as comfortable with or without it on solo runs.
Also, if you can't go without the music, you can always choose races with bands on the course!

professorbeast - that's good to know about not enforcing the no iPod rule during races, I'm not advanced enough to not need my music while I run. Maybe someday.
johnnyk8 - I haven't graduated to the newer iPod's yet, not have I got a smart phone. I will look into a bluetooth once I have the proper technology.
shipshape - I got some crappy magnovox earbuds with the clips, maybe I just need to get the right sized ones. I was looking into the ones that wrap behind the head.

For headphone recommendations- I've had problems with many types of headphones running, until I found behind-the-ear and neck band headphones. They stay on great, are really comfortable, and have excellent sound quality. They are costly, but well worth it!
Some examples:
My current favorite are Sony MDR-AS50
Other good ones are made by Sennheiser (for example, the PMX80)

I also cannot run without music. I've run all my races including one marathon with my iPod and have never had a problem. For headphones, I highly recommend Sennheiser's PMX80 behind the ear phones. They are sturdy, sweat resistant and have great sound quality (e.g. you don't hear the thud-thud of your foot strikes) when you run.
saa says:
agree the sennheiser PMX80 are the best to wear also waterproof so they dont corrode/break when it rains! i,ve tried loads and these are by far the best for comfort durability and value

I'm a purist. I've never run with music, and probably never will. But I understand why some people like it. Not me, I want my mind to wander freely and my senses attuned to the outside. I like to be "in the moment" when I'm running. So much of the rest of my day has distractions, that my runs are a nice "down time" from noise, input, digital or otherwise.
Personal best, ran the Lakewood Mug Run 5K this morning. Beautiful day after weeks of rain during the weekends. A lot of people showed up and some of these guys (and girls) turned in some real fast times. I think the fastest for the 5K was 16 minute-something, amazing. Even better someone ran a 10K at 30 minutes! I was happy with my time, fastest I've ever ran it.
Almost ran out of gas at the end because I kicked it into high gear a little sooner than I should've thinking the finish line was closer than it was. All it all was a great day and can't wait to go for a 10K.
