sprained ankle
Saturday, 04 February 2012 - Written by tdeyesu [profile]
I was on a great run last night. My goal was to get 5 miles in under a 8 min/mile pace and just after I hit mile 3 at 23:31, I stepped on something and rolled my left ankle real bad. Very frustrating as I have been on a great training program for my next 1/2 on March 17th. I'm sure I'll heal in time for that event, but I will miss a week or two of valuable training time and I am quite bummed about it.

Any word of advice out there for ankle sprains other than the usual RICE?

Great run to start the year
Sunday, 01 January 2012 - Written by tdeyesu [profile]
Happy New Year everyone!!!

I just started the new year off right with a 7.2 mile run. I had an up an down 2011. I basically took the entire summer off from running due to an injury (overuse injury from not training properly for a 1/2 marathon in March). While I did set a new PR in the 1/2, I fell off after that only to pick up again in September and finished the year off great. I am a smarter runner now and make sure to listen to what my legs tell me. I have made sure to follow the 10% rule since starting up again in September and now I am up to 20 miles/week with no injuries. I feel great and I am looking forward to a great year of running.

I am going to sign up for a 1/2 marathon soon. I see a new one starting in Washington D.C in March - does anyone else plan on running in that?

Have a great year

Best Run Ever....
Sunday, 20 March 2011 - Written by tdeyesu [profile]
I knew my training was going very well, but I have been hampered by some nagging shin splints the last 3 weeks so I was worried about how I would feel today.

Turns out, I just had my best run ever and I feel awesome. I just completed the Shamrock 1/2 Marathon in Virginia Beach in 1:53:33 absolutely crushing my PR (previously 2:02:09). Shin splints didn't bother me at all (of course I had a few advil in me before the start). Great race - well organized, nice route, and very supportive environment.

I feel so good right now. It is that feeling of 4-5 months of good training paying off more than I thought possible. I would have been happy to stay under a 9 min. per mile pace and was able to finish strong and end up with a 8:40 pace.

Now I just have to figure out what is next....

Thanks for letting me share.

Awesome. Nice job.

Tremendous! What training program did you follow? I am attempting my first half late this summer.

MidwesternWoman says:

Whohoo - what a fabulous run. Very inspiring, especially regarding sticking to a training program. Congratulations.

dearnold -

I have basically made up my own training program. I have been seriously running for about 4 years now and have learned what works for me and what I need to avoid. For instance, I don't run on back to back days. Once I made that switch, I have cut down on my injuries greatly. I was a college catcher and my knees still bother me at times so I have to listen to them. The best thing I have learned (the hard way) is to progress slowly. I try to follow the 10% rule as best I can. I believe in rest and stretching. I stretch on a daily basis.

Long story short - I mapped out a plan for myself about 2 months ago for what I wanted to accomplish each week in terms of mileage and pace and stuck to it pretty well. The last 3 weeks were tough due to some shin issues so I cut back on the mileage but tried to keep the pace where I wanted it to be.

For this particular race, I credit the pace setters. They had 1/2 Marathon pace setters and I stayed with the 2:00 pace group until the 5 mile mark. I then thought that I should get ahead of them so that when I slow down towards the end, I could latch on to that group for the last bit of motivation to get me to my goal. It turned out that I was able to keep my pace til the end.

I did learn some more about fueling during the race. I was methodical about eating the Gu Chomps. I ate one at every mile marker from 6 miles on. It gave me something to look forward to at each mile marker and was a nice distraction.

I also did not wear a watch at this race. Normally, if I was ahead of my intended pace, I may actually slow down as to not to burn out at the end.

I have definitely found that there are many plans out there but you need to use those as a base but create one for yourself.

Good luck.

Pain in the shin
Monday, 07 March 2011 - Written by tdeyesu [profile]
I don't want to use the term shin splints because I don't fully understand what that is, but I have definite pain on the inside of my lower right shin. It is managable most of the time, but i just completed a run and as I was streching, the pain was pretty bad.

Any advice? I am going to keep working through this for at least a couple of weeks because I have a 1/2 marathon coming up on March 20th.

empty_sea says:

I have had shin pain in years past when I run too much on pavement. What works for me is stretching after every run. The best stretch I have found is the alphabet stretch. Let your foot dangle in the air and use your toes to write the alphabet. I find cursive easier to write in the air than print. :) This seems to help me a lot.

a week off...

A nice little stomach virus swept its way through my family. Started with the kids and then it was my turn. It hit me pretty hard and really didn't have an appetite until yesterday. I will pick up with my running again tomorrow with a nice 6-7 mile route. My legs feel fresh and are my mind is ready to get back into the 1/2 training. Maybe some time off is not such a bad thing anyway.

Great Treadmill Workout
Tuesday, 08 February 2011 - Written by tdeyesu [profile]
Had a long day toady and looked forward to running this evening all day (even on the treadmill). Had no set goal when I started so I just put the treadmill on 7 MPH and a 1.5 incline and kept it right around those marks for an hour. After the hour was up, I still felt strong so I cranked it back up and ended up with a total of 9 miles. I have been working on my pace - trying to keep every run under 9 m/m. My goal is to break the 2 hour mark in a 1/2 coming up in March. Tonight I was able to do the 9 miles in 77:40 which is awesome for me.

I am hoping to get back outside soon. The streets are clear enough now, but the wind tonight was gusting up over 25 MPH (at 29 degrees) so I was ok with one more time on the treadmill.

I've been running on the tread mill a lot lately. Just started putting a little hill in there. I can really work up a sweat that way.

johnnyk8 says:

I love treadmills. Especially the presets. The 10 km preset on mine goes to 9 mph at a 6 ° incline for 3 mins! Brutally delicious

jdoty1977 inspired me...

This snow/ice/rain is making it tough to keep on the routine I set for myself. I don't mind running in the cold, but where I live, I need the sidewalks to be at least somewhat clear to get a long run in on the streets. After reading jdoty1977's post ("Zombified"), I decided to hit the treadmill hard (for me at least). I put it at 1 incline and 7MPH and went for an hour. It was awesome. I got into "Minute to Win It" with these 5 kids that won $500,000 and had 3 chances at the million. I usually don't watch that show but it kept my attention while on the treadmill so i kept it on and then I couldn't turn it off.

This was the first time that I have been able to complete 7 miles in an hour. Is 7 miles on a treadmill the same as on the streets?

jdoty1977 says:

Great to hear! Excellent job on the Mill! Yes, 7 miles in terms of distance is pretty much the same. I think the treadmill is slightly easier because you are not dealing with the world. Wind, hills, curbs, potholes, unleashed dogs, crazy drivers, etc. The treadmill surface never changes, but the streets are always changing. However, the treadmill speed also never changes. And you dont have that air to evaporate your sweat and cool you. In other words, the arguements go both ways, but it really doesn't matter. You got your workout on and that is a great success!

dearnold says:

Now I am inspired from you both. Thanks for paying it forward! I haven't run that far on a treadmill before, but will try for a little more distance today. I been a stuck in a rut as far as my treadmill workouts go. Mostly 30 minute increments.

I know there's always been debate on the mill vs outside running. For me, I use the incline to make the mill slightly more challenging. One thing I do know is that when I finish my workouts, I am soaked like a sponge. Ahh yes...
