Looking at my stats for January I was able to log 73 miles running, 202 miles on the bike, 5200 yards in the pool, and 15 miles walking. My running has all been really slow running with my month pace at 9:16. I have a couple more weeks of keeping my HR as low as possible then I will move into the build phase of my training program and start to put in some speed sessions. I am disappointed that I only got to the pool 3 times, but it is an improvement over last year where I only went to the pool once. I love biking and always feel like I could go for hours more when I get off. Still fighting a cold, but I am feeling injury free and ready for February.

This is with work being crazy and sickness?
Mad man!
lazyking says:
I only have one word for you: TRIATHLETE
I hope you continue to build up and please get rid of that cold :D
Good job.

Some rocking numbers, brother. Seems like a good month's training in winter to me!
KathyStenson says:
Great month!!
Sounds like you're really close to where you'd like to be. I don't know how you folks train for triathalons, that's some serious dedication (plus, I'm a horrible swimmer, you couldn't pay me to swim!!).
What event are you in training for again? And when is it?
Thanks for your update, I always look forward to this time when everyone assesses how they did!!
Work is still pummeling me, but I have been managing to get in most of my workouts. I ran for 45 minutes today. Nice and easy. Enjoyed the cold, dark morning. Maintaining my workouts wouldn't normally be a big issue, but I feel a cold coming on. The high stress is getting to me and I am getting worn down. I will have a few more weeks of this before things get better. I plan on not over doing things while work is so revved up. Nice easy workouts. Weekend workouts will have to be what I can fit in at an easy, easy pace. The nice thing about being so busy is that time flies by.
lazyking says:
I hear ya! Life can get pretty busy and mess with your fitness. But always having it in the back of your mind is a great thing. Just watch what you eat when you work out less.
adigerati says:
Glad you're still finding time to fit in some workouts. I've pretty much adopted the philosophy that exercise is one of the essentials of my life. Something that I will make time for, along with eating, bathing, and things of that nature. It's just too beneficial both physically and mentally to not include it as part of your routine. I bet you know where I'm coming from.

Awesome, good job for squeezing in a run! Sometimes I find physical exercise actually helps me get over a cold or stuffy nose quicker. Maybe it's my imagination, but it always seems to help clear out my congestion.
If it makes you feel any better, the fact that you can go on a 45 minute "nice easy run" is great in itself. A 45 minute run for me is anything but nice and easy...
It has been a heck of a week and I am barely hanging on. Major system problems at work have been demanding my time and is consuming my thinking. I can't sleep at night for worry, and I am missing my workouts in the morning. This is week 3 of my Ironman training and I am down a lot of swim and run time. Since my next 3 weeks will be busy I am worried about the poor start to training. What the heck would I do if this was week 25 of the training?! Times like this when you need a good run but can't get it in because of the need to sleep or work responsibilities simply stink. I will try to get in what I can. That is all I can do right now.
adigerati says:
I remember something similar happened to you before with work, were you training for something during that time as well?
Hang in there, sometimes the crisis's in our life provide great perspective when the training gets mentally tough. Next time you're thinking about skipping a day because you just don't feel like it, remember that time when work was so crazy that you couldn't squeeze in any training.
I've heard the hardest part about an Ironman is the training. People who complete an Ironman and still have to work for a living are the toughest of the bunch.
jamiemarchio says:
Stay mentally focused and prioritize rest so you don't end up sick. Lack of sleep combined with stress will push you over the edge and cause an even longer lay-off. Hopefully you can get in the training routine soon. Sounds like your priorities are in order. Fortunately you are very early in the process of IM training and not further along. Good luck to you!
All the weather reports last night were reporting snow overnight. I went to bed looking forward to putting in an hour of running in the snow. Turned out the streets were dry when I woke up and I was disappointed. Snow is falling now, of course, but I was looking forward to it. I love the sound dampening effect snow has. I love how things are brighter and cleaner (before the snow gets all messy and dirty). I love how the snow shrinks the world for a moment.
lazyking says:
Same thing happened in my town today. They predicted lots of snow and the whole city is shut down. Guess what? We barely had any snow. All the small business owners are furious.
rcblu2 says:
I use my regular running shoes and I typically run in the middle of fairly quiet streets where the snow has already been a little compacted. I try not to wade through deeper snow. It can be a heck of a workout since your feet slip when you toe-off. It can be messy at times, but I usually enjoy it.
christinacampins says:
Hey, just curious. How do you run in snow? I have only been running since May and have not had that opportunity and just thought I would be stuck on the treadmill when it snowed. Do you have special shoes and what do you do to keep feet dry? Thanks
For Christmas my wife surprised me with a running jacket. I have been looking at them for over a year and have just not wanted to drop the money. Opening her gift I actually teared up. I guess I didn't know how much I wanted one. I have taken it out on a few runs and I love it so far. I still need to test it in the rain, but it is great in the cold and wind. It is florescent orange (high visibility) and has the longer sleeves with thumb holes. The sleeves then cover your knuckles which is awesome. On one on my run it was cold and windy and my finger tips were still freezing and I discovered another flap in the sleeve end that allowed me to cover my whole hand. It was great. It has tiny pockets on the sides for gels which are also perfect for the pennies and dimes I pickup while running. It doesn't have a waterproof pocket for mp3 players, but that is fine. I just wear a waist band underneath the jacket. This jacket wicks moisture and is light, however, it is much warmer th...

Sounds great! Which jacket did she get you? I need a running jacket and I've been looking at the Under Armor Storm but I cant find it anywhere. I'd love to know what else is out there that's good. :)
rcblu2 says:
The jacket doesn't say the model, but from a quick Internet search it looks to be the Nike Men's Element Shield Full Zip and is priced around $105.00. I was looking as jackets $50 to $100 bucks more which is why I was hesitating for so long. I am just happy to have something right now.

Congrats on the great gift from your great wife!!
It's so nice to have the right equipment, clothes, shoes so that you are comfortable in the elements. Enjoy!!
I have been reflecting on 2011 for a while now. I fell short of some of my workout goals for the year, but I accomplished more than I thought I would. I ran a couple half marathons, a couple marathons, 3 sprint triathlons and a half-Ironman distance triathlon. I finished the year strong and feel healthy. I had ITBS issues through May and seem to be over that. I love riding on my bike trainer and an hour workout goes by with me wondering where the time went. Here are the stats:
Running: 804 Miles
Biking: 1965 miles
Swimming: 49 Miles
Walking: 147 Miles
For 2012, I will be training for the Wisconsin Ironman race on September 9th. The path to the Ironman will result in me doing a number of shorter races, but I want to get in a couple marathons and century bike rides. I also would love to do a 50k run in October. I started off the year with an hour ride this morning. I hope to get out for my first run tomorrow morning.
Last night I got myself excited about getting in a 4 miler this morning. I was all ready to go when I realized it was raining. Cold and rainy. Oh, well. Not much else to do than to change into my older running shoes and gear up to splash in some puddles. I took off slow and stayed slow the whole run. My outer shell (which isn't much of a waterproof shell) did almost nothing to block the rain and I was pretty soaked after 1 mile. I just kept on for the circuit. I can't say it was a great run or even a good run, but I ran. I didn't work on speed and my heart rate wasn't low. Not much positive about the run other than it ended. Let's hope the next run is better.

Its winter, it'll get worse before it gets better! Good on yer for going out in it anyway - you're more dedicated than me (I stick to the treadmill if its raining!)
