New Site, New Mind
Wednesday, 20 August 2008 - Written by Brett [profile]
Ok, here we go. I decided to try this site out. I was unfamiliar before. I've been back to running for close to three months now, have completed the NYC half-marathon, and have two more half-marathons planned for the next six weeks. Although I would let running take a back seat to tennis any day of the week, I have been enjoying getting back on the road. Yesterday I discovered Roosevelt Island (Can you imagine living next to a place for almost six years and never going?). Nice running. I think I'd like to extend my run around that area today. Ok, I have to start working, but I'll be back to talk about tonight's run.

First week of practice!
Saturday, 16 August 2008 - Written by dmberry [profile]
Yayyyy, cross country! At least, yay girls. So, we've had a good first week of practice. Slow and steady is good. We don't want anyone to get hurt.

Wednesday we ran the course. We ran it VERY slowly. But we only did that to acclimate the new runners to their new best friend!

Thursday we ran the train tracks. Good in theory, but bad in practice. The ties were really uneven and extreme focus was necessary. When we cut onto route 3, though, that was good (except for almost being killed by a Mack truck). And going up Parker St. was some decent hill work. I liked this run except for the railroad. I must find some way to adapt it.

Friday! Mt. Prospect! Extreme hill work. We did very well. I was very proud of the team. Matt was very startled to see us. It was beautiful. We finished with some strides and a lap around the football field, both of which with shoes off. It felt so good!

Time Trials

Time Trials at Penitentiary Glen.

Time-18:00
Place-13th (Overall), 8th (Team)

Felt great the first mile (5:13), then fell back a little bit after the mile and the half, but I got through it. Next race: aim to lead JV to a victory and make it back on varsity.

My first Ultra! Woohooo!
Friday, 15 August 2008 - Written by mjstone05 [profile]
Ran my first ultramarathon on Sunday! It was a 50K-I placed 4th with a time of 3h55m and change. Man, I couldn't stop my legs from shaking afterwards. It was awesome though- all trail and packed dirt roads, very little elevation change at all. I felt like a longer marathon in the dirt, no crazy runs up mountains or anything. But damn- I was sore. I haven't even done a long run (over 15ish) since May- just consistent high mileage weeks. I'm still sore and tight though. Now I feel the need for a 50 miler! Ultimate goal- qualify for Western States and get that buckle. Happy running-

Workin' It Off
Tuesday, 12 August 2008 - Written by swanny [profile]
I had way too much fun with my girlfriends this weekend. After 4 days off, I jumped on the treadmill. I wasn't ready, I had talked myself into a quick 20 minute walk but as soon as I started, I changed my mind. Walking is just too boring. I ended up running at various paces for almost 40 minutes. I was on the treadmill a total of 45 minutes. I was able to log on 4.1 miles and it felt good. My hip is feeling so much better, but now I think the problem has moved to my inner thigh. It's almost as if something gets pulled. Anyway, hopefully Thursday will be my long run. It sounds like stormy weather so I will most likely hit the treadmill again. I'd love to get outside sometime soon!

New Shoes
Monday, 11 August 2008 - Written by heidi.bgg [profile]
Today I got new running kicks. I went back to the Big Peach Running Co., and found the guy that helped me extremely nice and helpful, although he had an accent that was sometimes difficult for me to discern.

At my very first fitting for running shoes, at Fleet Feet, I was told I overpronate and was given a few shoes to try out. I found the Saucony's the most comfortable and they performed pretty well for me but died so suddenly that as an amateur runner, I thought maybe they weren't the right shoes. I had also been wondering if the arch support wasn't too much for me. After the 10k Sprint for Cancer, I had really bad shin splints on the insides of my shins above my ankles. I thought I would get more warning than that.

So, at my second fitting last April, I went to Big Peach just to try somewhere new and again was analyzed with the result being overpronation, but I was also told I have a flexible arch. More information is never a bad thing. The sales girl brought out a bunc... Read full entry

The start
Thursday, 07 August 2008 - Written by spurt34 [profile]
Time to begin the training and weight loss! I have two long term goals.
Goal 1
To run in a 5k race in 2009.
Goal 2
To Weigh 175lbs by 1.1.2009

By accomplishing these goals I hope to find good health and fitness, to have increased energy. I also hope to find an athletic hobby that I enjoy doing and competition with myself to improve.

A combination of exercise and eating more consciously are the paths I will use to reach these goals.

I will need to find a good tracking method to record my progress, both exercise and eating. I initially plan on running and weight training tracked on LogYourRun along with The Hackers Diet daily exercises.

My initial thoughts are to concentrate heavily on the weight loss and to build stamina.

Notes:
15 min floor core = 130 cal
15 min strech = 45 cal
run (10min pace) = 100cal/mile
cycle = 90cal/mile
weight training = 68cal
running:
40 minutes ideal
8 min miles
5 miles 778 cal
3 miles 467 cal
1.5 miles 233 cal

My Run Timings Worsen
Thursday, 07 August 2008 - Written by suhaimi [profile]
I'm just not improving! My run timings actually worsen! I'm not getting it why I'm still not able to cut at least a minute of my runs. Worse, I actually added a minute to my time.

13 year old on a mission
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 - Written by roadrunnerextraordinaire [profile]
I'm 13 and totally obssessed with running. It's not necassarily just to be "skinny" or whatever. I run because it's fun, and I want to continue this habit so I'll be healthy when I get older. I think logging your run is a really cool way to keep track of all the activities you do every day!

August - Week 2

I ran a full mile yesterday. Lyle said my pace was bullshit and suggested that I "dig deep baby, come on!"...I plan on running again this afternoon and then going for a delightful swim afterwards.

Aug 1 Run
Friday, 01 August 2008 - Written by sse1979 [profile]
Ran at 5:30 this morning, 3.1 miles, slow. Right heel hurt on warm up walk, but no problem in run. Stomach started to hurt about 2 miles in, and ached the last mile of run. Really had to use the bathroom but waited until I got home! Must have been the pasty for dinner last night!!! Slow run, 9:59/mile. Should run on Sunday now. Good start to August to run on the first day, hopefully I will do better than July!

The long road to recovery
Tuesday, 29 July 2008 - Written by GWPeaches [profile]
*** I am afraid of the treadmill. My heart races even before I turn the stupid thing on. The test is now... can I run again? ****

Today is my first time running (more like slow jogging) since my stress fracture. I formulated a plan: 5 min walking warm-up, 5 min jogging at a 12 min/mile, walk two min, jog 5 min, and so on. I'm trying to follow doc's orders and ease back into it. I don't want to go through the pain again...so I'll be patient. But, the past five months of no running has been terrible!

My fist jogging cycle felt good. I thought, "Do I feel pain?" NO. "How's my heart rate and breathing?" FINE. Good start!

I cycled into the walk, and then was happy to move the speed back up to my mediocre 12 min/mile pace. I counted the minutes, and decided that five minute cycles was just not enough. I grabbed a notebook from the treadmill next to me, and covered my time display. Then, I just ran. I wanted to speed up, but held back - no need to be stupid about this.

Treadmill Running - the beginning runner
Wednesday, 23 July 2008 - Written by Leah17 [profile]
I started running on a treadmill last month because I can't seem to get up early enough to beat the sun, and it has gotten so hot here in Central Florida. So, I have decided to train on the treadmill. The treadmill seems easier, but the time goes by so slowly. I bought an I-pod hoping the time would go by faster, but nope... I'm up to running longer, up to 15 minutes at 5.5 before I need to slow down to 4.0 for a little water. I am now running 5 miles in an hour, and seem to be stuck in that zone for the past 2 weeks. I have been reading about marathon runners and times of 7 - 8 minutes in a mile. Holy ____ ! How long is it going to take me to get to that speed?

woops, another 80- maybe a LONG race
Monday, 21 July 2008 - Written by mjstone05 [profile]
Well, I was only going to do a 65 mile week to recover from the last 80, but, well, I like to run. So I put in the 80 again, then went out this morning before having to do some work and what not and wouldn't you know, there must be some type of ligament or something in the back of your leg/knee, above the calf that can turn into a rod of steel because holy crap- it's tight. I don't feel it at all going uphill and straight, only downhill. So, seeing as I live in the land of no flat areas, that sucks! I'm thinking it'll feel better tomorrow. This week I will do a 65 damn it. On a side note, there is this guy named Karl Malarkey or something that is going to try and break the record for running the Appalachian Trail (2174 miles in 47 days 13 hours or less). So, seeing as I've already hiked it and I am a long distance runner, should I race him? How funny would it be- him being a professional ultrarunner with a support crew and sponsors, and then ME. Just me, stretching, ready to r... Read full entry

Think I Have a Stress Fracture
Sunday, 20 July 2008 - Written by jungltemptress [profile]
I've had 4 stress fractures before--1 in each femur and 1 in each shin--and I thought that I could avoid that by taking tons of calcium and sticking to the 10% rule, but evidently not. My left ankle always hurts because I sprained in a few years ago and it never healed right, but in the past two weeks it has started hurting WAY worse than usual. I can suck it up if it's just a muscular thing, but this aches and feels overall awful, even when I'm just walking around during the day. I'll be at around mile 6 and I feel something give way in my ankle/heel, and from then on I pretty much want to die. The reason I think it's a stress fracture (or maybe a bone spur) is because it's definitely a single, small location in the back of my heel. My entire foot hurts, but it all stems from that one location.

And in my OTHER foot, formerly the "good" one, I've started getting this feeling in my four small toes that they're going numb. It's hard to explain, but it's sort of a painful numbnes... Read full entry
mjstone05 says:

Sounds like a bone spur in your left, maybe neuroma in right? That would be very atypical- bone spur could happen by slamming down on heels while mortons neuroma by exclusive forefoot running. Damned if you do, damned if you don't huh? I don't have a solution for you, just commenting. Maybe go see a sports doc, then pedorthist for orthotic. Maybe work on form. I don't know, just some options. Toughing it out works- but only if there is nothing REALLY wrong. Maybe try sticking to track running for a month or so- sounds incredibly monotonous, but if it works, whatever right? Good luck.

Day 1
Thursday, 17 July 2008 - Written by cbeaver [profile]
Today I got up pretty much okay. I pressed snooze once. But it was almost for show. I forced myself to go right downstairs and eat something for breakfast (banana) and hurry up and get to running! I turned the TV on because I couldn't sit in silence and eat the banana while my dog was foaming at the mouth for a chance at a bite. Ellen was on, so naturally I had to watch till a comercial before I could tear myself away. After having a minor holy-shit-i-cant find-my-ipod-AGAIN-moment, i got to the treadmill. I started walk and I already knew it didn't feel right. I walked for 3 minutes. Then I bumped it from level 3 to level 5 for some running action. I had to literally push myself to finish the mile. It was almost sad. I wasn't really super physically tired or super out of breath, but something was wrong. I guess you would call it out of shape and lazy. But I finished a 12 minute mile (which is pathetic for me), and I walked for another 3 minutes. Each minute knocking it down a notch f... Read full entry
