Ouch and boooooo but woo hoo for my Garmin

Ok well my colleague Marcela (who is a nurse) pretty much insisted on Monday that I make an appointment to see somebody about the pain in my foot and yesterday I went to a sport doctor. The bad news is that I seem to have 'knocked knees' (this is my best translation from German without sounding daft). He did actually say that I probably shouldn't run the marathon. But I am waiting for further opinions on that. The good news is that he has referred me to a specialist who is going do a full analysis of my running and custom make some inlays for me to wear. Apparently other people I have spoken to who have had this problem have said that the inlays have really helped. So fingers crossed.

Despite this I have still managed to get through this weeks training so far and have also survived two strength sessions at the gym. I must admit lifting weights was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Perhaps I can live with doing this twice a week.

The best news of the day is that my Garm... Read full entry

The miles are increasing rapidly...

So last week started off not quite as well as I had hoped having to cut my first training short due to pain in my foot. I am pretty convinced now that it might be my shoes although haven't committed to buying a new pair yet. I felt a bit deflated after that but after resting on Wednesday I was fine for my five miles on Thursday and Friday. Everything was going well. I did have some more pain again on Thursday evening but a few ibuprofen did seem to do the trick.

Last weeks training was 21 miles including a 10 miler yesterday. Luke bless him came all the way with me on his bike just to keep me company. Actually I don't think I would have completed the run if it wasn't for him as I was feeling a bit worse for wear. The heat didn't help at all.

I am still not happy with my speed but after the foot problems last week I was reluctant to start interval training but I am going to give it a go this week - probably on Friday. Also I have definitely decided to stick to the weights this ti... Read full entry

Another weekend crossed off..

Oh and how depressing it was to have to get up and come to work this morning instead of going running.

On Friday I returned to step aerobics for the first time in two months. I hurt my ankle snowboarding at the end of March and step was hurting for quite a while. So the Doctor advised I take a break from step although he said running should not be a problem. It must have been a strained ligament or something. I did notice something afterwards but I couldn't really say that it was pain. But ow did I have sore muscles in the backs of my lower legs on Saturday. But Luke rubbing the magic cream in did seem to help.

I did about 8 miles yesterday and it was quite hot towards the end so next week I am going to get out earlier. This is not a problem on my runs during the week as I go at 6:30am but on a Sunday I do like to have a lie in. Well I suppose it is a small sacrifice to make.

This week I am doing 19 miles training including a 5km race in Karben on Friday evening and am also... Read full entry

2 Weeks in!
Tuesday, 03 June 2008 - Written by Purple Muffin [profile]
Ok so perhaps I should have started to write how the training was going when I started two weeks ago but well I have been so busy that I haven't found the time.

For those of you who have just caught up I am training for my first marathon in Darmstadt in September. The form is in - although money not yet been deducted from my account and there is no going back.

I cannot really comment much on the training so far it has just been like a normal running plan I would follow any summer 3 runs during the week with a longer one on Sundays. Sunday just gone I did 6 miles so slowly going further than what I would normally run for fun but still not as much as I was training last year for the half marathon.

My thoughts at the moment are diet and shoes. I cannot decide if I am eating too much or not enough and am probably trying to concentrate too much on the right things when I know what is good for me. Is pasta ok for tea tonight Luke? :-p As for shoes - do I really need to change the... Read full entry

Hi, Purple Muffin! I'm living in Giessen and training for my first marathon (the Berlin Marathon at the end of September) as well! Sounds like your training is going well so far!

I always question the 300-mile rule (that's the distance I've always heard) for shoes. I think it's something the shoe companies put out there to help make them more money... Surely there's some truth to it, but I'm running my marathon in the shoes I have now, regardless of how many miles they've got on them. We'll see how that goes...

That is great. Berlin was actually my first choice but not possible as it is my boyfriend's sister's wedding on that day. So I picked Darmstadt instead.

I think I have done about 150 miles in mine so far and have no plans to change them - especially considering I kept my old ones for 2 years with no problems.
