Seasonal Allergies Hurting My Training
Wednesday, 19 March 2008 - Written by Melanie T [profile]
Well, my goal was to be consistently above 4 miles per run by now. I also wanted to be able to make it to 5 miles by this past weekend. Didn't reach my goal:-( I got a cold last Thursday, took Friday off, ran 4.7 Sat am, then 4.7 on Sunday with my brother (Charlie's beenr running for 6 years and can do a 1/2 marathon without much effort). Unfortunately, immediately after out Sunday run, my allergies kicked in like I've never had before - I must have sneezed an average of 30-40 times/hr for the next 24 hours. By Monday afternoon, I thought I was better and ran 3 miles at the gym. Then came Tuesday -tried to run outside again - had to give up after just 2 miles and fell victim to another 24 hours of sneezing. So I have come to the realization that this is a terrible time of year in AZ to take up outdoor running. ...but I don't want to give up...I'll have to stay in the gym for now...hopefully, I'll be able to run outside again in time for my 1st 5K in April
Tevin says:

There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t run your first half marathon by the fall. I posted an excellent 12 week “beginners” training program on this site (2hr – Half Marathon) that will not only get you there but you’ll develop all of the confidence you need to successfully complete the run in 2 to 2 ½ hours without any strain or day after effects. One note, all of the runs in this program should be done at a pace that is 1 ½ - 2 min. slower than you would run a 5-10 k unless noted. That will help you avoid injury and allow for the development of stamina. The short runs will help you develop the speed.
Take it slow and listen to your body, if it tells you to slow down, slow down. If it tells you to stop, stop, this is only training and you don’t want to hurt yourself and not be able to train.
This program really works, I started using it a year ago and until then I had never even run a mile. I the past year I’ve completed 3 half marathons culminating with the Las Vegas run this past Dec and I’ve registered for 2 more so far for this season.
Not to bad for a guy in his 60’s
